Characterization of interphase nuclei from triploid hybrids between Pennisetum purpureum Schumach and Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Fajardo,Cristiane Gouvêa; Davide,Lisete Chamma; Pereira,Antônio Vander.
This study evaluated the structure and the volume of interphase nuclei from root meristems of the genotypes of napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum), pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) and hybrids resultant of such breeding. In napier grass, nuclei were areticulate. Both pearl millet and the triploid hybrid had semi-reticulate nuclei; also, the hybrid presented a small proportion (6%) of areticulate nuclei. Pearl millet had the highest averages of nuclear dimensions, such as volume, diameter and radius, followed by the interspecific hybrid and napier grass. There was no intraspecific variation for the type of nuclear structure, which indicates this feature is important for cytotaxonomic studies involving the genus Pennisetum. Results demonstrated that...

Genome size and ploidy variations in pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) and napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) genotypes Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Animasaun,David Adedayo; Morakinyo,Joseph Akintade; Mustapha,Oba Toyin; Krishnamurthy,Rama.
Abstract Pennisetum glaucum (Pearl millet) and P. purpureum (Napier grass) are economically important members of the genus Pennisetum . The knowledge of variability in chromosome number, size and genomic content of the species could provide clues on the mechanisms responsible for decrease or increase in genomic content in the evolutionary pathway. In the present study, twenty nine genotypes consisting of 24 pearl millet and 5 Napier grass were assessed for inter- and intra-variations in chromosome number, ploidy status and genome content. Conventional cytogenetic was used for chromosome counting and flow cytometry technique for assessing genomic contents of the genotypes. Pearl millet genotypes were diploid (2n = 14) while Napier grass were mainly...

Performance of Braford steers grazing on cultivated pastures and fed or not fed an energy supplement R. Bras. Zootec.
Vaz,Ricardo Zambarda; Lobato,José Fernando Piva; Pacheco,Paulo Santana.
This experiment evaluated the performance of 84 Braford steers grazing on summer and winter cultivated pastures fed or not fed an energy-protein supplement. Steers were 10 months old and weighed, on average, 165 kg at the beginning of the trial. Steers grazed on cultivated winter pasture, consisting of black oats (Avena strigosa) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), and then on cultivated summer pasture, consisting of Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum). The following treatments were applied: SS - supplement was fed during both seasons; SN - supplement was fed only during the winter; NS - supplement was fed only during the summer; and NN - steers were not fed any supplement. Supplementation resulted in higher body weight and better body condition score...

Periods of interference by Cyperus esculentus L. in Pennisetum purpureum Schum Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Brighenti,Alexandre Magno; Oliveira,Maurílio Fernandes.
Abstract Interference from weeds directly affects the productivity and the quality of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) fodder. The difficulty in controlling weed species is one of the primary limitations to the production and use of elephant grass as forage in dairy farming and for biomass production in energy generation. The objective of this study was to determine the different periods in which yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) interfered with elephant grass forage yield. Two field experiments were conducted using a randomized complete block design with four replicates in Valenga, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Elephant grass and weeds were maintained together for increasing periods of time: 0, 14, 28, 42, 56 and 70 days after planting (DAP)...

Preemergence herbicides on weed control in elephant grass pasture Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Brighenti,Alexandre Magno; Calsavara,Leonardo Henrique Ferreira; Varotto,Yago Vieira Guerra.
ABSTRACT Elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) is an important forage crop that has been proposed as a potential feedstock for bioenergy production. However, weed interference is a major factor limiting elephant grass production. Field experiments were conducted in 2014 and 2015 to evaluate preemergence herbicides for selective weed control in an elephant grass pasture. Herbicide treatments included atrazine + S-metolachlor, atrazine + simazine, ametryn, ethoxysulfuron, S-metolachlor, diuron + hexazinone, sulfentrazone, imazethapyr, and atrazine at label use rates. Weedy and weed-free treatments were included. Atrazine + S-metolachlor, atrazine + simazine, ametryn, ethoxysulfuron, S-metolachlor, sulfentrazone, and atrazine did not cause...

Soil macrofauna in a Cerrado/Caatinga ecotone under different crops in Southwestern Piauí State, Brazil Ciência Rural
Santos,Djavan Pinheiro; Schossler,Thiago Rodrigo; Santos,Isis Lima dos; Melo,Nathália Batista; Santos,Glenio Guimarães.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to characterize the soil macrofauna under different crop systems and compare them to the macrofauna under the native vegetation of a Cerrado/Caatinga ecotone in southwestern Piauí State, Brazil. The areas studied included areas under sweetsop cultivation (Annona squamosa L.), andropogon grass with three years of use, andropogon grass with six years of use, pivot-irrigated corn, Napier grass, and native vegetation. In each area, soil layers of 0-0.1, 0.1-0.2, and 0.2-0.3m, including the surface litter, were evaluated following the Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility Program (TSBF) recommendations. The soil macrofauna from the different land-use systems were identified to the family level, and the mean density of each...
